Have you ever caught yourself slipping into what I call "request-based thinking" in prayer? If we're honest, many of us approach God more as takers than givers. I've done it countless times—treating Him like a genie's lamp or an endless vending machine. I’ve laid out my wishlist: "God, give me this amount of money, fix this relationship right now, advance my career, take away this stress, remove this frustration." My prayers were full of "I need," "Can You please," and "Make sure that..."
But here's one of the most important lessons I've learned: Seek alignment with God, not just assignment from Him.
Jesus teaches us this beautifully in the Lord's Prayer:
"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10, NIV)
Instead of dictating outcomes, try shifting your language to surrender:
- "Lord, show me what You desire."
- "Give me wisdom through Your Spirit."
- "Grant me courage and strength to obey, not just to succeed."
Flip the submission: Stop trying to get God to submit to your agenda, and start submitting yours to His. Desire His will above your own.
Remember, true connection with God matters far more than perfect communication. Consistency in seeking Him outweighs making every prayer session flawless or elaborate.
And when anxiety creeps in, lean on this promise:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6, NIV)
Anxiety and prayer are opposites. Gratitude is the powerful antidote that turns our worries into worship.
Today, let's move from demanding our way to delighting in His. Present your requests—yes—but with open hands, a thankful heart, and a deep desire for His kingdom to come and His will to be done.
