April 1st | Obey So That You May Have Life

A man holds tablets on a rocky hill, surrounded by a crowd in a desert. A man in a blue shirt reads a book to an attentive audience indoors.
Obedience → Life as God intended (blessing, fruitfulness, closeness to God)

Deuteronomy 30:16 – “For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.”

Deuteronomy 30:20 – “And that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

This passage comes at the climax of Moses’ third and final sermon to the people of Israel. After forty years in the wilderness, they stand on the edge of the Promised Land. Moses lays out a clear, life-and-death choice before them, simply obey.

God is not a harsh rule-giver — He is life itself.

To love the Lord means:

- Walking in obedience to Him

- Listening carefully to His voice

- Holding fast to Him with all your heart

When we do this, God promises life — not just existence, but the full, rich, productive, and blessed life He originally designed for His people. Blessing, increase, peace, and longevity in the land flow from this relationship.

Moses presents a simple but profound either-or:

- Obedience → Life as God intended (blessing, fruitfulness, closeness to God)

- Rejection / Disobedience → Destruction and loss

The choice is ours every single day.

Personal Reflection

- Where in my daily life am I truly “holding fast” to God, or am I slowly letting go?

- Do I see God’s commands as life-giving, or do I sometimes view them as burdensome restrictions?

- In what area of my life right now is God calling me to listen more carefully to His voice and walk in greater obedience?

Application for Today

“Life” in this passage is much bigger than just breathing — it includes joy, purpose, peace, fruitfulness, and the richness that comes from walking closely with God.

Today, make the deliberate choice to:

1. Tell God you love Him (not just in words, but through your actions)

2. Listen for His voice in His Word and through the Holy Spirit

3. Hold fast to Him — especially when it’s hard or inconvenient

Remember: Obedience is not about earning God’s love. It is the natural response of a heart that already loves Him. When we choose Him, we are choosing the very best version of life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are my life. Today I choose to love You with all my heart. Help me walk in obedience to Your commands, listen carefully to Your voice, and hold fast to You no matter what. Thank You for the promise of blessing and a full life when I follow You. Keep me from drifting into choices that lead to destruction. Let my life today reflect the rich, abundant life You created me to live. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
