March 9th | We Are Declared Righteous, Even Though We Don't Deserve It

"This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." (Romans 3:22-24, NIV)
We all "fall short"—or, as the original language describes it, we miss the mark. But what exactly is the mark we're aiming for? What standard are we failing to reach?
The mark is nothing less than what God created us to be. Psalm 8 paints a breathtaking picture of humanity's original design:
"What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas." (Psalm 8:4-8, NIV)
God didn't create us as ordinary beings. He bestowed on us glory and honor. He gave us power, potential, and a high calling—to rule wisely over creation as His representatives. We were made to be great, to reflect His excellence, to live awesome lives that bring Him praise. This dignity and vocation are gifts from God, not rights we earn.
Yet sin entered the picture, and we missed the mark. We fell short of that glorious purpose through our rebellion against God. But here's the incredible good news: God doesn't leave us in our failure.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, God steps in with a divine solution. He cancels the guilt our sins deserve and credits us with righteousness instead. We are declared "not guilty"—even though we don't deserve it—and actually righteous in His sight. This happens because Jesus, God's own Son, became the perfect sacrifice for our sins. In the Old Testament, people repeatedly offered animal sacrifices to atone for sin, but those were temporary shadows pointing to the ultimate sacrifice. Since Jesus' death on the cross, no further sacrifices are needed—His one perfect offering covers it all.
This gift of forgiveness and righteousness comes with four key components:
1. It's free — We don't pay for it or earn it.
2. It's by God's grace — Pure, undeserved kindness from Him.
3. It's through redemption — The price was paid by Christ Jesus' blood on the cross.
4. It's credited to us by faith — When we believe in Jesus, it's applied to our account.
What a blessing this is! As David declares in Psalm 32:1-2:
"Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit." (NIV)
Today, rest in this truth: You were created for glory, but sin caused you to fall short. Yet through faith in Christ, God has freely justified you, canceled your debt, and restored you to right standing with Him. Live in the freedom and joy of that reality—crowned with glory once again, not because of your performance, but because of His grace.
