April 2nd | How Long Will You Wait

A child joyfully receives a gift with a red bow. A man looks pensive beside a shelf with a similar wrapped present. Warm, dim lighting.
Go from a promise to a possession. Waiting Can be a form of disobedience.

Joshua 18:3

Joshua looked at the people of Israel and asked a pointed question: “How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?” (ESV)

The nation had gathered at Shiloh, where they set up the Tent of Meeting. The land had largely been subdued, yet seven tribes still had not claimed their God-given inheritance. They were lingering, hesitant, and inactive—described in the King James Version as being “slack” and in The Message as “sitting around on your hands.”

God had already promised and delivered the land into their hands. Victory was theirs in principle, but they had to rise up and walk it out in practice.

Key Lessons from Joshua 18:3

- God gives the promise, but we must take possession. The inheritance was a gift, yet it required active faith, courage, and obedience to claim it fully.

- Delay can become disobedience. The tribes weren’t in outright rebellion—they were simply stalled. Comfort, fear, or complacency kept them from stepping into what God had already provided.

- Faith without action is incomplete. Joshua didn’t scold them for lacking belief in the promise; he challenged them for failing to act on it.

Other translations drive the point home with urgency:

- “How long are you going to wait before taking possession…” (NLT)

- “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land…” (NKJV)

- “How long will you delay going out to take possession…” (CSB)

This passage still speaks powerfully today. Many believers settle for partial victory—enjoying God’s presence at “Shiloh” while leaving large areas of their calling, freedom, purpose, or blessing unclaimed.

God’s promises are not automatic; they are invitations that demand a response of obedient faith.

Reflection for Today

What has God promised you that you’ve been putting off?

Is there a step of obedience, a territory of your life, or a dream you’ve allowed to sit dormant?

Don’t let spiritual slackness rob you of the full inheritance. The same God who promised the land to Israel stands ready to empower you today. The question echoes: *How long will you wait?*

Take that next step. Move from promise heard to promise possessed. Your inheritance is waiting—go in and take it by faith.
