A potsherd is a broken fragment of pottery, often unearthed in archaeological digs today. In the Bible, potsherds symbolize fragility, brokenness, suffering, and insignificance.
Isaiah 45:9 warns: “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?”
We all have moments when we stubbornly try to control our own story, convinced we're fully in charge. In those times, we become broken—fragile like a potsherd scattered on the ground. God is our all-knowing Creator, and He gave us free will out of love. Yet when we run too far ahead with that freedom, ignoring His guidance, we stray from His purpose and end up broken and incomplete.
As a mental performance coach, I firmly believe we can train our minds, build positive thought patterns, form empowering habits, and achieve success. But true transformation begins when we surrender those thoughts and outcomes to God. His will, not ours, be done.
Just as a potsherd is a shattered piece of clay, so are we when broken by life or our own choices. Yet God, the Master Potter, has the power to restore us, reshape us, and make us whole again—into the vessel He originally designed.
Isaiah 64:8 declares: “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
And in Jeremiah 18:6, God asks: “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand.”
Today, release your grip. Let the Potter have His way. In surrender, we discover His divine strength within us, turning our brokenness into something beautiful and purposeful. Trust His hands—they never fail.
