“Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”
— Mark 7:15
“For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
— Mark 7:21-23
Jesus cuts straight to the heart of the matter—literally. The religious leaders of His day were obsessed with external cleanliness: washing rituals, clean foods, and outward appearances. But Jesus exposed the deeper truth: real defilement doesn’t come from what we take in; it comes from what is already inside us.
Our hearts are the source. Out of the heart flow the thoughts and actions that damage us and those around us: lust, anger, greed, pride, deceit, envy—the full ugly list. No amount of external discipline or rule-keeping can fix a polluted heart. Rituals, good intentions, or “clean living” on the outside will never produce true righteousness.
Only God can do that.
Fellowship with Him is broken by sin, and sin begins in the heart. That’s why real transformation isn’t about trying harder to look holy—it’s about letting God change us from the inside out. A heart cleansed and renewed by the Holy Spirit is what produces a life that honors God.
Yes, we should still guard our environment. We should fight temptation, set healthy boundaries, and remove what stirs up sin. But we must never fool ourselves into thinking that external management alone will make us clean. The battle is won or lost in the heart.
Today, ask the Lord to search your heart. Where is sin hiding? What thoughts, attitudes, or desires have you been excusing? Bring them honestly before God. Confess them. Ask Him to replace them with His purity, wisdom, and love.
A changed heart will naturally produce a changed life.
