March 19th | It's Not Easy, But It's Not Heavy

A crowd of men in traditional attire carry large sacks in a sunlit, historic setting. One gestures expressively, conveying determination.
Their approach turned faith into a checklist of regulations rather than a living relationship with God.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV):

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees—religious leaders often seen as the elite and “fancy folk” of Judaism—placed crushing expectations on the people. They took the Old Testament law, including the Ten Commandments given through Moses, and layered on hundreds of additional rules and regulations. These man-made traditions turned God’s good law into an unbearable weight.

Jesus Himself called them out for this hypocrisy:

Matthew 23:4 — “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.”

Luke 11:46 — “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”

The Pharisees added endless details—rules about how to wash hands, what counted as “work” on the Sabbath, and more—while creating loopholes to exempt themselves. They burdened others without offering real help or mercy.

Their approach turned faith into a checklist of regulations rather than a living relationship with God.

But Jesus offers something completely different. Life in Christ is free—not earned through perfect rule-keeping, but given freely by God’s grace. Jesus paid the ultimate price: God gave His only Son to die a brutal death on the cross for our sins, so that we could be fully forgiven and made right with Him.

You don’t have to chase a long list of dos and don’ts to earn God’s love. Instead, Jesus invites you to come to Him just as you are—tired, burdened, imperfect—and find genuine rest. It’s about surrendering to Him, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your heart, and seeking God’s will through prayer.

Christianity is not about regulations, but relationship.

Not about customs, but connection.

Not about outward decorum, but devotion from the heart.

When we take Jesus’ yoke—His way of life rooted in love, humility, and grace—we discover that it fits perfectly. It’s easy and light because He carries the weight with us. He is gentle and humble, never loading us down like the Pharisees did.
