Romans 6:23 (NIV)
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Think about that word "wages." Wages aren't a surprise bonus—they're what you've earned through your work. Sin pays out exactly what we've earned: death. And it's not just eventual physical or spiritual death. Sin robs us right now—it kills joy, drains contentment, and sabotages our God-given potential. It promises freedom and fulfillment, but delivers chains, emptiness, and regret.
Proverbs 14:12 warns us: "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death." Sin always looks appealing in the moment—like a shortcut to life—but it steals far more than it gives.
Contrast that with the second half of Romans 6:23: eternal life is a gift from God. Gifts aren't earned; they're freely given out of love. We could never work hard enough, be good enough, or clean ourselves up enough to deserve eternal life. God doesn't hand us what we've earned (death); instead, He offers what we could never earn on our own—life abundant and forever through Jesus Christ.
Jesus Himself declares in John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest." The enemy (sin, Satan) robs and destroys, but Christ gives full, overflowing life.
So what do we do with this truth?
1. Don't downplay sin — Call it what it is. Recognize its deadly wages: pain, emptiness, separation from God, and death in every form. No excuses, no minimizing.
2. Put to death the old ways — Don't negotiate or coexist with sin. Treat it like aggressive cancer—cut it out ruthlessly. Romans 6 urges us to count ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ. Starve it, reject it, replace it.
3. Listen to God, even when it's hard — His voice might not always say what our flesh wants to hear, but He knows exactly what we need. He loves us fiercely and calls us to our highest potential in His purpose. Trust His direction over our feelings or the world's promises.
Sin is universal—we've all earned its wages. But the solution is God's grace through a real relationship with Jesus. Grace isn't a "get out of jail free" card or a license to keep sinning. Grace is freedom from sin's power, empowering us to live in righteousness and pursue the full life Christ died to give us.
Believers: You've been set free from sin's penalty and its grip. Choose today to walk in that freedom. Reject the thief's lies, embrace the Giver's gift, and live the abundant life Jesus promised.
