January 13th | Bearing God's Image: Embrace Your Royal Role - Part 1 of 3

ID tag with a smiling man drawn on it, wearing a blue shirt. Text below reads "a child of God." Tag hangs on a brown cord.
We are children of God. With that identity comes responsibilities.

Ever catch yourself staring in the mirror and thinking, "Wow, I look like... me"? Well, buckle up—because according to Genesis 1:27, when God looks at you, He sees a family resemblance!

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27, NIV)

And right after that mic-drop moment, God doesn't just high-five Himself—He hands us the keys to the kingdom:

"God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'" (Genesis 1:28, NIV)

We're not just random extras in God's creation story—by bearing His image we're His official representatives on earth! Think of it like being appointed as the family manager for the ultimate Creator's masterpiece. Psalm 8:6-8 amps it up:

"You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas." (NIV)

This stewardship isn't some burdensome chore—it's a gift wrapped in our identity as God's children. We're called to act like His agents: nurturing creation, unlocking its full potential, and reflecting His wise, loving kingship everywhere we go. It's like being handed the remote to the planet—not to binge-watch destruction, but to make everything flourish under God's rule!

But here's where it gets real (and a little convicting): this royal responsibility shapes how we live as His children.

First up—no false idols allowed. One of the Ten Commandments straight-up says don't bow to fakes. Paul nails it in Acts 17:29:

"Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill." (NIV)

We're the real-deal image-bearers, so why settle for cheap knockoffs? Let's keep our worship dialed in on the One who actually made us look like Him!

Second—and this one's a zinger—watch that tongue! James 3:7-9 drops some truth bombs:

"All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness." (NIV)

We can train lions and dolphins, but our words? Wild mustangs. When we trash-talk, gossip, or curse another person—boom—we're disrespecting God's own image! It's like spray-painting graffiti on a masterpiece and calling it "self-expression." Every human you meet carries the family resemblance—let's treat them like royalty because that's exactly what they are.

So today, lean into this truth: Your identity as a child of God comes with epic responsibilities—and they're awesome gifts! We're starting a quick series here to unpack more of these tied to who we really are in Him. How will you reflect His image today? Maybe by speaking life instead of shade, or caring for creation in one small way?

You're not just surviving—you're reigning as His beloved rep. Let's make Him proud!
