January 23rd | Perseverance During The Race

Let perseverance complete its work in you, supported by the patience that comes from trusting His perfect timing.

As a child of God, one key aspect of our identity is to live with perseverance. Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

The Christian life is more like a marathon than a sprint—it requires sustained effort over the long haul, with our gaze steadily fixed on Jesus.

James 1:2-4 puts it this way: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Trials aren't just obstacles; they're opportunities for growth. They test our faith, build perseverance, and lead us toward spiritual maturity.

So, what's the difference between patience and perseverance?

- Patience is the calm endurance of delays, hardships, or provocation. It involves managing our emotions, maintaining inner peace, and not losing focus or hope while we wait on God's timing. It's about accepting circumstances without resentment or despair.

- Perseverance (sometimes called endurance or steadfastness) is more active: a determined, persistent commitment to press forward and do what needs to be done—no matter how long it takes or how difficult it becomes. It pushes through opposition, keeps taking steps, and refuses to quit.

These two qualities beautifully complement each other in the believer's life:

Patience helps prevent burnout during seasons of perseverance by keeping our hearts steady and our spirits from growing weary. Perseverance, in turn, gives direction and purpose to our patience, ensuring we don't just passively wait but actively pursue God's will.

Today, whatever trial or long race you're running, remember: fix your eyes on Jesus. Let perseverance complete its work in you, supported by the patience that comes from trusting His perfect timing. You are not lacking anything as you grow in Him—press on with joy!

My Mental Performance Coach, Ben Newman says it this way, " Aggressive patience with longstanding obedience."
